Behind the movement

Walk to Work Day originally started in 2004 and is celebrated the first Friday in April.  It was founded by U.S. Secretary of Health & Human Services Tommy G. Thompson who wanted to inspire everyone to exercise, and get in shape.

Today, Americans are encouraged to walk to work or take a lunchtime stroll to help clear your mind, refocus and give you a burst of energy to help conquer your day.

Walking to work not only benefits you but also the environment. By walking instead of driving, you are reducing your carbon footprint and it’s a great way to explore your neighborhood close to home and at work.

Take this time to unplug, put your phone away and look around.  Or, listen to a podcast you’ve been putting off, discover a new artist, or just allow your mind to take in the scenery around you.

Walk this way

Before you walk out that door, consider your attire. With activewear continuing to be a huge trend, this should be simple and fun! For a polished look, you can wear a comfortable pair of slacks with a lightweight blazer, cardigan or jacket. Finish the look with a smart pair of comfortable ballet flats or loafers.

If your workplace is more relaxed, consider pairing leggings or joggers with a jacket and your favorite pair of sneakers.

We’re loving these polished looks from Her Canvas, Savoirflare & The Northern Light for the perfect mix of streetwear and uptown chic.

What to bring

As the athleisure trend grows so do the choices in accessories to carry off these looks. Choose a bag that you would be proud to take from the office to the gym to happy hour without carrying 3 different totes.

With so many different bag options that you can use to carry your essentials with, you aren’t limited to just your laptop bag or your gym bag.

You can carry an entirely different ensemble in your bag to change once you arrive. We’re fans of bags with lots of extra pockets, and compartments to help keep you organized.

Now get out there in the sunshine and fresh air and enjoy yourself!
